Styling your table for an Aussie Christmas

When it comes to Christmas the Australian summer does not exactly fit in with the image of snow covered trees, sleighs and woolly jumpers.

Why not give your Christmas an Aussie twist? Think sparkling wine, seafood platters and backyard cricket.

Teal and navy paired with lemon and lime citrus tones make a fresh, bright interior colour palate for an Aussie Christmas. This is a great colour scheme for Christmas because it breaks the traditional mould and gives a more contemporary look. Instead of the heavy reds and golds, a bright and relaxed summery palette is perfect for our climate.

When it comes to setting your table, a statement centrepiece is a great anchor point for a tablescape, which you can build your table styling around. Try two candelabras for a rectangular table instead of a centrepiece.

Let the colours of the food and drinks take centre stage by displaying them in beautiful serving ware. Fresh shellfish, citrus cocktails or a Pavlova with tropical fruits on a white cake stand would all make a great visual impact.

Keep your base colour palate on your tablescape neutral and incorporate pops of colour through napery and crockery, such as jugs, glasses and placemats of even straws.

A rustic wooden table with white chairs and brightly coloured placemats can make a strong impact. Alternatively a plain white linen tablecloth adds a crisp relaxed vibe or you could try slip covers for your dining chairs to reinforce the sense of occasion.

Group vases of fresh flowers in your chosen accent colours to get visual bang for your buck. Native flowers in yellow and greens add to the relaxed feeling and are very appropriate for the occasion. If you have a pendant light above your dining table you can use it to create a focal point by hanging fairy lights, greenery or baubles from it.
