How To Prepare Your Home For Summer Entertaining

Looking to throw a summer get-together as luxe and exclusive as one of Mr. Gatsby’s soirées, but unsure how to style for it?

The search is over – our Director Justine Wilson has five golden summer styling tips that even Daisy won’t be able to stop talking about!

Get Decked Out
Outdoor zones such as balconies, courtyards, gardens or decks can be used to extend your living space, and with Australia’s lovely weather it would be crazy not to make use of these spaces! It’s key to find the right furniture because it can easily make or break your alfresco space.

Stackable outdoor furniture is great if you want to transform your deck into a d-floor as they are easy to pack and take up very little space when not in use. If you’re going for a more chilled-out vibe, outdoor lounges encourage you to relax. If you have a pool, a sun lounge or daybed is a must to create that resort style feel, and if you have a small balcony, a simple café setting with a small table will make the space perfect for those casual pop-ins.

There’s Nothing Healthy About A Tan!
Weatherproofing is a must for summer entertaining if you don’t want to sizzle! A shade cloth is an easy and inexpensive addition to your outdoor area for overhead protection. However, if budgeting isn’t a factor, a retractable awning is ideal all year round and gives you the flexibility that a pergola or shade cloth may not provide.

Single And Ready To Mingle!
To maximize your alfresco space, it is key to create multiple mingling zones. Take your Christmas family gatherings for example – the adults need their space, the kids need theirs, and the oldies need somewhere to fall asleep by 11:00pm.

An outdoor kitchen is a fantastic addition as it adds functionality to your outdoor living space. If you don’t have the budget for a custom outdoor kitchen, you can find decent freestanding units or just include a nice-looking BBQ – our personal favourite is the Beefeater. Outdoor kitchens with wine fridges and sinks feel expensive and will add value if you decide to sell your home.

Pro tip: Try to match the design of your outdoor kitchen to your indoor kitchen; whether it’s the cabinetry, the bench top, or even the lighting fixtures. Also look to connect the two zones with the addition of a servery window or big bi-fold doors so there is good circulation, and maximum functionality.

Picking Perfect Plants
For our Australian weather, low maintenance plants are great, such as succulents, agaves or yuccas. You don’t need real plants to have the look either. Consider high-quality astroturf instead of grass or a fake “green wall.” They look fab if you’re time poor but want the lush look. Grouping nice pots with big plants at different heights is an easy way to create a visual focal point. Tropical plants such as palms are great as they create a resort style feel. Just remember, it’s about the placement and grouping – the right mix will give your garden or patio a well-landscaped look.

And Justine said, “let there be light!”
As a rule of thumb, fairy lights instantly improve the ambience of alfresco spaces tenfold. When it comes to lighting, think votive candles that project nice shadows, overscale lanterns, or add some solar fairy lights. Twinkling soft lighting will create a welcoming ambience and it doesn’t have to break the bank. Just keep in mind that you don’t want the night to divulge into a game of murder in the dark, so one indirect light source is essential.

If you are thinking of renovating, consider how to best highlight your outdoor area with a mix of dramatic, ambient and task lighting to make your summer entertaining something that the Great Gatsby himself would want to attend.
